Did the payment actually leave your account?
Check your bank or card statement before assuming the top-up failed entirely. If no money left your account, the transaction simply did not complete, and you can try again safely. If money did leave your account but your Vodafone balance shows nothing, contact Vodafone support with your bank reference number.
How to check your Vodafone balance
Dial *#1345# from your Vodafone handset and press call to see your current balance on screen within seconds. You can also log in to My Vodafone online or open the My Vodafone app to view the same figure. If the balance has not updated after a top-up, try restarting your phone first before assuming the top-up failed.
Common reasons your top-up fails
Several issues can prevent a Vodafone top-up from completing:
Card declined by your bank
Your bank may decline the payment to prevent fraud. The error message typically reads: “Sorry, your credit card registration wasn’t successful.” JustAnswer UK advisers recommend reaching out to your bank, as there is nothing Vodafone can do to change the bank’s fraud-prevention decision. Try using a different card or payment method to top up.
Bank security check not completed
For your security, your bank requires extra verification for some card payments. You will usually be asked to enter a one-time passcode sent by your bank or approve the payment in your banking app. If this step is not completed, was closed, or timed out, the top-up will not go through and you will not be charged. Try again and make sure you complete the bank security check to finish the payment.
Wrong number entered
Double-check every digit of the number you entered, including the country code if you are topping up from abroad. Entering an incorrect number is one of the most common causes of failed top-ups.
Voucher code problems
If you have recently bought a voucher and it is not working, the cause could include the voucher already being used, an expired voucher, or an EFTPOS printer or software fault. Contact Vodafone customer care if you have recently bought the voucher and have not used it, and provide the serial number and PIN on the voucher to the agent.
Alternative top-up methods to try
If one channel is down, switch to another. Vodafone offers several top-up options:
- Top up online at Vodafone’s website (not applicable for Pay as you go Plus and VOXI accounts)
- Text 2345 with TOPUP plus the amount you want to add and the last four digits of your payment card (you will need to have this payment card saved on your account)
- Call 2345 from the phone you want to top up (you can also activate a voucher over the phone)
- Use a voucher by activating it online
- Buy a physical top-up voucher from a newsagent or supermarket
Using a voucher code is a reliable fallback when app and online payments are both failing.
What to do if nothing works
Restart your phone after any successful top-up attempt, as credit sometimes takes a few minutes to register and a restart refreshes the connection to Vodafone’s network. If your balance still does not update after 15 minutes, call Vodafone customer services on 191 (free from a Vodafone mobile) and quote your bank transaction reference. They can trace the payment and apply credit manually if the funds left your account but did not arrive.
New to Pay as you go?
To activate your SIM card, you will need to top up a minimum of £5 or buy a Big Value Bundle. If you do not, you will not be able to use the network. You will need to be connected to WiFi to top up your new SIM.
