What countries are included in Vodafone Roaming?

Using your Vodafone mobile abroad involves a zone-based system where charges depend on your destination and your specific plan. Some Pay monthly plans, particularly those with “Xtra” benefits, include roaming in dozens of countries, but for most customers, daily charges or multi-day passes are required to use their UK allowance of data, calls and texts overseas.

Vodafone’s network is organised into four main zones for roaming: A, B, C, and D. While Zone A is typically included in your plan at no extra cost, travelling to other zones incurs a daily fee that allows you to use your domestic plan allowances, subject to a fair use policy.

How Vodafone’s Roaming Zones Work

Vodafone categorises global destinations to simplify its roaming charges. It is essential to check which zone your destination is in before you travel by using the official Vodafone Roaming Charge Checker to avoid unexpected costs.

Zone A: Inclusive Roaming

All Pay monthly and Pay as you go plans include roaming in Zone A destinations at no additional cost. This means you can use your UK allowance as if you were at home. The countries included are:

• Republic of Ireland
• Isle of Man
• Iceland
• Norway

Zone B: European Destinations

Zone B covers 47 European destinations, including popular holiday spots like France, Spain, Portugal, and Italy. For most Pay monthly customers on plans started or upgraded after 11 August 2021, using your phone in Zone B costs £2.75 per day. This daily charge lets you use your UK allowance of calls, texts, and data up to the 25GB fair use limit. Some plans with “Xtra” benefits may include Zone B roaming without this daily charge.

Zones C and D: Worldwide Destinations

For travel beyond Europe, Vodafone groups countries into Zones C and D. Using your phone in any of these destinations costs £7.86 per day for Pay monthly customers. This fee allows you to use your home plan’s allowances, subject to the 25GB monthly data cap.

• Zone C includes 32 destinations such as the USA, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and Turkey.
• Zone D covers a further 73 worldwide locations, including the UAE, India, Thailand, Morocco, and Egypt.

Some premium plans, like those with “Global Roaming” included, allow you to roam in Zone C (and sometimes Zone B) destinations without paying the daily charge.

Can I buy a roaming pass instead of paying daily?

Yes, for travel within Zone B (Europe), purchasing a pass is more cost-effective for trips longer than a few days. Vodafone offers two options for Pay monthly customers:

• An 8-day European Roaming Pass for £15
• A 15-day European Roaming Pass for £20

To purchase a pass, you can text the corresponding code to 40506 from your Vodafone mobile. For the 8-day pass, text 8DAYEUROPE to 40506, and for the 15-day pass, text 15DAYEUROPE to 40506.

Understanding the Fair Use Policy

When roaming, all Pay monthly plans are subject to a Fair Use Policy. Two key rules apply:

1. 25GB Data Limit: You can use up to 25GB of your monthly data allowance while roaming in Zones A, B, C, and D. If your home plan has less than 25GB, you can use your full allowance. Exceeding this cap will result in extra charges of £3.84 per GB.
2. Extended Stays: Vodafone’s roaming services are intended for occasional travel. If you roam for more than 62 days in a four-month period, and your usage abroad is greater than in the UK, Vodafone may apply additional charges.

What about Pay as you go customers?

Pay as you go customers have a different system. While Zone A is included, you cannot automatically use your credit for a daily roaming charge in other zones. To use your phone in Zones B, C, or D, you must purchase a specific roaming ‘Extra’ bundle before you travel. These bundles provide a set allowance of data, minutes, and texts for a fixed period. The available Extras and their costs vary by destination, so it is vital to use Vodafone’s official Roaming Charge Checker for accurate pricing.

Are there any places roaming does not cover?

Yes. Standard roaming passes and daily charges do not apply on cruise ships, ferries, or aeroplanes. These locations use non-terrestrial satellite networks, which are significantly more expensive. If you connect to a maritime or in-flight network, Vodafone charges are applied on a per-use basis, regardless of your plan.

The official rates are:

• Making calls: £2.40 per minute
• Receiving calls: £1.80 per minute
• Sending a text: 60p per message

Data usage is typically not available on these networks. To avoid these charges, it is advisable to put your phone in airplane mode while at sea or in the air.
