Turkey sits outside O2's Europe Zone, so your UK allowances won't work there automatically. Standard roaming rates are punishingly expensive: £7.20 per MB of data, around £2 to £3 per minute for calls, and 50p to £1 per text. Even checking email once could cost you several pounds. The good news is that O2 offers bolt-ons specifically for Turkey, and travel eSIMs provide a competitive alternative if you only need data.
What O2 charges in Turkey without a bolt-on
Arrive in Turkey without an active roaming add-on and you'll pay O2's standard out-of-zone rates. Data costs £7.20 per megabyte, which means a single 10MB Instagram scroll could cost £72. Voice calls you make or receive are billed at approximately £2 to £3 per minute. Text messages cost between 50p and £1 each. These rates apply to both Pay Monthly and Pay As You Go customers, though PAYG users may find the service isn't even officially supported in some cases.
O2 Travel Bolt On: £7 per day
Most Pay Monthly customers can add the O2 Travel Bolt On before they fly. It costs £7 for each calendar day you use your phone in Turkey (based on local time in Ankara). In return, you get unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, and unlimited data. The bolt-on activates automatically on any day you make a call, send a text, or use mobile data.
To switch it on, text TRAVEL to 23336 or log into your My O2 account and add it there. Do this before you leave the UK to avoid any confusion at the airport.
One caveat: O2 applies a 2Mbps speed cap to the unlimited data. That's fast enough for Google Maps, WhatsApp, and standard-definition video, but noticeably slower than a full 4G or 5G connection. If you're used to streaming in HD or downloading large files, you'll feel the difference.
O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate (premium plans only)
If you're on an O2 Ultimate Plan, you may already have the O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate Bolt On included at no extra charge. This covers 75 destinations worldwide, Turkey among them. Check the My O2 app under your plan details to confirm whether you have this benefit. If you do, you can use your phone in Turkey exactly as you would in the UK, subject to the same 2Mbps speed management on data.
The 25GB roaming cap does not apply to Turkey
O2 enforces a 25GB fair-use limit when you roam in its Europe Zone (the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, plus a few others). Turkey is not in that zone. The O2 Travel Bolt On operates under separate terms and offers unlimited data (speed-managed, as noted above), not a 25GB cap. This is a common source of confusion, so it's worth clarifying before you travel.
Pay As You Go customers: consider an eSIM instead
O2's PAYG service is not designed for international roaming. Where it is technically available, you'll pay the same £7.20 per MB that out-of-plan monthly customers face. Some data bolt-ons exist (for example, £45 for 1GB), but the value is poor. If you're on PAYG, a travel eSIM is almost always the smarter choice for data.
Travel eSIMs: a flexible, often cheaper alternative
A travel eSIM lets you keep your O2 SIM active for calls and texts while using a separate data plan on the eSIM. Providers like Holafly offer unlimited data plans for Turkey starting at around £3.90 per day (May 2026 pricing), with the daily rate dropping if you buy a longer plan. For a week-long trip, an eSIM could save you £20 or more compared to the O2 Travel Bolt On.
Critical point: Turkey's Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) blocked access to many international eSIM provider websites and apps in 2025. You must buy and install your eSIM before you leave the UK. If you wait until you land in Istanbul or Antalya, you won't be able to access the provider's site to complete the purchase or activation.
Four steps to take before you fly
- Log into My O2 and confirm your plan type, roaming entitlements, and whether you're eligible for the Travel Bolt On or already have Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate.
- Do the maths. Multiply £7 by the number of days you'll use your phone. Compare that total to the cost of an eSIM for the same period.
- Activate your chosen option in the UK. If you're using the O2 bolt-on, text TRAVEL to 23336. If you're buying an eSIM, purchase it and follow the provider's installation steps on your phone before you board.
- Save O2's international contact number: +44 7860 980 202. You'll need this if you run into problems while abroad.
Turkey is a popular destination, but it's also one where roaming can get expensive fast if you're unprepared. Whether you choose O2's official bolt-on or a third-party eSIM, the key is to sort it out before you leave. Once you're in Turkey, your options narrow considerably.
