Why keeping track of your data matters
Running out of mobile data mid-month can trigger extra charges or a frustrating speed cap, depending on your Vodafone plan. Knowing exactly how much data you have left means you can pace your usage, decide whether to buy a data add-on, or simply avoid a surprise on your next bill. Vodafone offers four official routes to check your balance, and your handset itself adds a fifth layer of visibility through its built-in usage tracker.
Ofcom requires UK mobile operators to provide customers with clear information about their usage, so Vodafone is obligated to make this data accessible. All four methods below are free to use.
Method 1: the My Vodafone app
The My Vodafone app is the fastest ongoing way to monitor your usage if you check frequently. It is available free on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Steps:
- Download or open the My Vodafone app on your handset.
- Sign in with your Vodafone ID (your email address and password).
- The home screen displays a circular data gauge alongside your remaining minutes and texts.
- Tap the data gauge to see a breakdown of how much you have used and how much remains in the current billing period.
The app also shows your next bill date, which tells you when your allowance resets. If you manage multiple lines on a shared account, you can switch between them from the same screen.
Method 2: My Vodafone online account
If you are on a desktop or prefer a browser-based view, the online account gives the same information as the app.
Steps:
- Go to vodafone.co.uk and click “My Vodafone” in the top navigation.
- Sign in with your Vodafone ID.
- Your dashboard shows data, minutes, and texts remaining for the current billing cycle.
- Select “Usage” or “My plan” for a more detailed breakdown, including any add-ons you have active.
This method is useful if your phone is not with you, or if you want to check usage on a tablet or computer.
Method 3: dial *#100# from your Vodafone mobile
This USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) code delivers an instant balance pop-up directly on your screen without requiring a data connection or app login.
Steps:
- Open your phone’s dialler.
- Type
*#100#and press call. - A message appears on screen within a few seconds showing your remaining data, minutes, and texts.
This method works even when you have used all your data, because USSD codes run on the signalling channel rather than the data network. It is the most reliable fallback if you have no internet access.
Method 4: call 191 free from your Vodafone mobile
Calling 191 is free from any Vodafone mobile and does not count against your call allowance.
Steps:
- Dial
191from your Vodafone handset. - The automated menu will read out your remaining data, minutes, and texts.
- If you need more detail or have a query about add-ons, stay on the line to speak with an adviser.
This option is particularly useful for customers who are less comfortable with apps, or if you are troubleshooting an account issue at the same time.
Using your phone’s built-in data tracker
Both iOS and Android include native data counters that complement Vodafone’s own figures.
On iPhone (iOS):
- Go to Settings, then Mobile Data (or Cellular on some regional firmware builds).
- Scroll down to see total data used in the current period.
- Individual app usage is listed below, showing which apps are consuming the most data.
- To reset the counter to align with your billing cycle, scroll to the bottom and tap Reset Statistics on your billing reset date each month.
On Android:
- Go to Settings, then Network & internet (exact wording varies by manufacturer), then Data usage.
- Set the billing cycle start date to match your Vodafone billing date so the counter aligns with your plan.
- Android will display a bar showing usage versus any limit you set, and a breakdown by app.
Important distinction: your phone’s native tracker records all data passing through your radio, including system updates, background refreshes, and tethering. Vodafone’s own counters only record data billed against your plan. The two numbers will rarely be identical. If there is a significant discrepancy, Vodafone’s figures are the ones that determine your bill.
PAYG customers: how data add-ons work
If you are on Vodafone Pay As You Go (PAYG), data is managed differently from Pay Monthly plans.
- Data is sold in add-ons (for example, a 30-day data bundle purchased via the My Vodafone app or by topping up).
- The My Vodafone app and *#100# both show the balance remaining on your active add-on.
- Most PAYG data add-ons expire at the end of the add-on period, typically 30 days. Unused data does not roll over to a new add-on unless your specific bundle states otherwise.
- If you have no active add-on, data charges are taken directly from your credit at a per-MB rate, which is significantly more expensive. The *#100# balance check will show your remaining credit rather than a data allowance in this case.
To avoid unexpected charges, buy a data add-on before your current one expires. You can do this via the My Vodafone app under “Add-ons”, or by calling 191.
Roaming and how it affects your data balance
Vodafone’s roaming policy has changed since the end of free EU roaming following Brexit. On eligible Pay Monthly plans, Vodafone currently includes certain European destinations within your standard UK data allowance, but this is plan-dependent and the list of countries can change.
Ofcom provides guidance on mobile roaming rights for UK consumers, including what operators are required to tell you before you incur charges abroad.
Key points for Vodafone roaming:
- Check whether your plan includes “Roam with Vodafone” or a similar feature before travelling. Log in to My Vodafone online or call 191 to confirm.
- If roaming is included, your UK data allowance reduces as you use data abroad, exactly as if you were at home.
- If your plan does not include roaming, data abroad is charged separately, and costs can accumulate quickly. Vodafone is required under Ofcom rules to send you a usage alert when you approach or reach a spend cap.
- For countries outside the included roaming zone, daily or weekly roaming passes are available as add-ons.
Always verify the current roaming terms for your specific plan at vodafone.co.uk/roaming before travelling.
What to do if your data seems to disappear faster than expected
If your balance drops faster than your usage would suggest, there are several common causes:
- Background app refresh: apps such as email clients, social media, and cloud backup services consume data continuously unless restricted. Use your phone’s per-app data settings (iOS: Settings > Mobile Data; Android: Settings > Apps > [App name] > Mobile data) to restrict background usage.
- Auto-updates: app and operating system updates can use hundreds of megabytes. Set both to update over Wi-Fi only.
- Tethering and hotspot: if you share your Vodafone connection with another device, that usage counts against your allowance.
- Streaming quality: video streaming at high definition uses significantly more data than standard definition. Adjust quality settings within streaming apps.
If you believe there is an error in Vodafone’s billing of your data, you can raise a complaint with Vodafone directly via 191, and if unresolved after eight weeks, escalate to the Ombudsman Services: Communications, which handles Vodafone disputes independently.
