Cancelling your Vodafone mobile plan involves a clear process, but the right steps depend on whether you plan to keep your mobile number and if you are still within your minimum contract period. This guide provides the verified procedures for leaving Vodafone, helping you avoid unexpected fees and ensuring a smooth transition.
Check your contract status first
Before starting the cancellation process, the first step is to check if you are still within your contract’s minimum term. This determines whether you will face an Early Termination Charge.
You can find your contract end date by logging into your My Vodafone account online. Alternatively, under rules established by the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, you can text the word INFO to 85075 from your Vodafone SIM. This is a free service, and you will receive a text back detailing your contract status and any charges you would incur if you left that day.
Three ways to cancel your Vodafone plan
There are three distinct methods for cancelling your service. The one you choose depends on whether you are switching to a new network and if you want to take your number with you.
1. PAC Code: To switch network and keep your number
A Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) is for customers who are moving to a different mobile network and wish to keep their existing phone number. This is the most common method and is regulated by Ofcom’s ‘Text to Switch’ system.
Once you give the PAC to your new provider, they handle the entire switch. Your Vodafone service is cancelled automatically when your number transfer is complete, typically within one working day.
How to get a Vodafone PAC:
- By Text: Text PAC to 65075 from your Vodafone SIM. You will receive your PAC within a minute.
- By Phone: Call 191 from your Vodafone phone or 03333 040 191 from any other phone.
- Online: Log in to the My Vodafone website and navigate to ‘Account settings’, then ‘Mobile switching’.
Your PAC is valid for 30 days. If you don’t use it, your Vodafone plan will remain active.
2. STAC Code: To switch network and get a new number
A Service Termination Authorisation Code (STAC) is for customers who are moving to a new network but do not want to keep their old number. Using a STAC ensures your Vodafone contract is cancelled without the need for a 30-day notice period.
How to get a Vodafone STAC:
- By Text: Text STAC to 75075 from your Vodafone SIM.
- By Phone: Call 191 or 03333 040 191.
- Online: Use the My Vodafone website as you would for a PAC request.
Like a PAC, a STAC is valid for 30 days. Provide it to your new network to trigger the cancellation of your Vodafone service.
3. Standard Cancellation: To end your contract completely
If you are not switching to another network and simply wish to end your service (for example, if you are moving abroad), you must contact Vodafone directly by phone. This method requires you to give 30 days’ notice, during which you will continue to be charged for your service.
- How to cancel by phone: Call Vodafone customer services on 191 from your Vodafone phone or 03333 040 191 from any other landline or mobile.
Have your account details ready. The adviser will confirm your contract end date and explain any final charges.
Understanding Early Termination Charges
If you are still within the minimum term of your contract, cancelling will trigger an Early Termination Charge (ETC). Customers who are out of contract do not pay this fee.
Vodafone calculates the mobile ETC by taking your monthly plan charge (minus any discounts), multiplying it by the number of months remaining on your contract, and then applying a small 2% discount.
Example Calculation:
- Your monthly plan costs £40.
- You have 5 months remaining on your contract.
- The total remaining contract value is £40 x 5 = £200.
- A 2% discount (£4) is applied.
- Your Early Termination Charge would be £196.
If your plan includes a handset on a Device Plan, you must also pay off the remaining balance of the device in full. This is a separate charge from the airtime service ETC.
Cancelling a 30-day rolling contract
For SIM-only or mobile broadband plans on a 30-day rolling contract, the process is simpler as there is no minimum term to breach and therefore no Early Termination Charge. You still need to provide 30 days’ notice to cancel the service. You can do this by calling 191 or by using a PAC or STAC code if you are switching to another provider.
Your rights and cooling-off periods
Under UK regulations, if you signed up for your contract online or over the phone, you have a 14-day ‘cooling-off’ period from the start of the contract. During this time, you can cancel your service without paying an Early Termination Charge, though you may be billed for any services used (such as calls or data). For advice on your specific situation, you can contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline.
