What Vodafone can and cannot do when your phone goes missing

This is the most common source of confusion for Vodafone customers: the network does not offer a live GPS tracking service that shows you exactly where your handset is at any given moment. That capability sits with the operating system on your device, not with your mobile operator.

What Vodafone can do is block your device by its IMEI number, the unique 15-digit identifier assigned to every mobile phone manufactured. Once an IMEI is blocked, the handset cannot connect to any of the four major UK networks, even if a thief swaps the SIM card. According to Ofcom, UK operators share a central IMEI block database, meaning a phone blocked on Vodafone is effectively barred from EE, O2 and Three as well.

Vodafone can also bar your SIM immediately, stopping any calls, texts or data charges being run up on your account from the moment you report the loss.

How to find your phone’s location before you call Vodafone

Before contacting Vodafone, use the built-in location tools on your device. These work as long as the phone has battery, is switched on and has an internet connection.

Apple iPhone and iPad: Open Find My on another Apple device or sign in at icloud.com. You can view the last known location, play a sound, put the device into Lost Mode (which locks it and displays a contact message) or erase it entirely.

Android phones: Go to android.com/find on any browser and sign in with the Google account linked to the phone. Options include locating the device on a map, ringing it at full volume and remotely wiping all data.

Act quickly. Once the battery dies or the phone goes offline, live location is no longer available, though the last known location is usually cached.

Step-by-step: what to do if your Vodafone phone is lost or stolen

The GOV.UK guidance on finding a lost or stolen phone recommends the following order of actions:

  1. Try to locate it remotely using Apple Find My or Google Find My Device (see above).
  2. Report the theft to the police. For theft, call 101 or report online via your local police force. You will receive a crime reference number. Action Fraud (actionfraud.police.uk) handles fraud-related device theft.
  3. Contact Vodafone to bar your SIM and block your IMEI. Call 191 free from a Vodafone mobile, or 03333 040 191 from any other phone. Vodafone’s help page for lost and stolen devices is at vodafone.co.uk/help/device/lost-or-stolen.
  4. Notify your insurer if you have handset insurance. You will usually need the crime reference number, your IMEI and proof of purchase.
  5. Change your passwords. If personal accounts were accessible on the device, update passwords and revoke access via your account security settings. The NCSC guidance on account security covers the basics for Google, Apple and email accounts.

Your IMEI number: why you should note it down today

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is the key piece of information Vodafone and the police need to action a block. You do not need to wait until a phone is lost to find it.

  • Dial *#06# on your phone. The IMEI appears on screen immediately.
  • Check the original box the phone came in. The IMEI is printed on a sticker on the outside.
  • On iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then About.
  • On Android, go to Settings, then About Phone.

Write the number down and store it separately from the phone. Some people photograph the box and store the image in cloud storage. This single step significantly speeds up the blocking process if the worst happens.

What happens to your contract if your phone is stolen

A point that catches many people off guard: if your phone is on a Vodafone contract and it is stolen, you remain contractually liable for the remaining monthly payments. The contract is between you and Vodafone for network service, not solely for the handset.

Your options in this situation are:

  • Handset insurance. If you purchased insurance through Vodafone, your insurer, or a home contents policy that covers mobiles away from home, submit a claim. A policy excess (the amount you pay towards the claim) typically applies. Check your policy documents for the exact figure.
  • Continue the contract. You can request a replacement SIM and use a spare handset, or purchase a new device separately, until the contract term ends or you become eligible to upgrade.
  • Speak to Vodafone. In genuine hardship cases, Vodafone’s customer services team may discuss options, though there is no automatic waiver of contract obligations.

Citizens Advice has guidance on mobile phone contracts and your consumer rights if you believe the contract terms are disputed.

Can the IMEI block be reversed if you recover your phone?

Yes. If your phone is recovered, contact Vodafone and provide evidence of recovery. Vodafone can submit a request to have the IMEI unblocked on the shared UK network database. This process is not instant and can take a few days to propagate across all operators, but it is straightforward once you have confirmed the phone is back in your possession.

Note that a remotely wiped device will need to be set up from scratch. If you used iCloud or a Google account backup, your data can be restored during the setup process.

How to report and stay protected going forward

To report a stolen phone:

  • Police (theft): 101 or your local force’s online reporting tool
  • Action Fraud (fraud-related theft): actionfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040
  • Vodafone: 191 (from Vodafone mobile) or 03333 040 191

To reduce risk going forward:

  • Enable a strong screen lock (six-digit PIN minimum, or biometric).
  • Turn on automatic cloud backup so your data is safe if the device is wiped.
  • Note your IMEI before any loss occurs.
  • Consider contents insurance that covers mobile devices outside the home.

Frequently asked questions

Can Vodafone track exactly where my phone is right now?
No. Vodafone does not provide a live location-tracking service to customers. Use Apple Find My or Google Find My Device for real-time location. Vodafone can only block your device by IMEI.
How do I get my Vodafone phone blocked after theft?
Call Vodafone on 191 (free from a Vodafone mobile) or 03333 040 191 from any phone. They will bar your SIM and flag your IMEI to the shared UK network block list.
Will I still have to pay my Vodafone contract if my phone is stolen?
Yes. You remain responsible for monthly contract payments. If you have handset insurance, your insurer may cover the cost of a replacement, but a policy excess usually applies.
What is an IMEI number and where do I find it?
The IMEI is a unique 15-digit identifier assigned to every mobile handset. Dial *#06# on your phone to display it, or find it on the original box. Store it somewhere safe before any loss occurs.
Should I report a stolen phone to the police?
Yes. Report theft to your local police force or via Action Fraud. You will receive a crime reference number, which is required by most insurers and can support the IMEI block request.
