Vodafone UK blocks international calls by default on all consumer plans. You must add an international calling Extra through the My Vodafone app, the website, or by phoning 191. Once the Extra is active (typically within seconds), your handset can dial overseas numbers without further configuration.

Why the block exists

Standard Vodafone UK contracts do not include international calling. The network applies an outbound block to all overseas numbers until you opt in. This is not a handset fault. When you dial an international number without the Extra, you will hear a recorded message stating the call cannot be completed. That message confirms the block is active on your account.

A second, less common cause is a manual restriction. Parental controls or a previous account holder may have placed a bar on international calls. If you suspect this, ring 191 and ask Vodafone to check for any call bars on your account. They can lift the restriction immediately.

How to add the international Extra

Open the My Vodafone app or log in at vodafone.co.uk. Navigate to Plan and Extras, then browse the international call add-ons. Vodafone sells several tiers, each covering different country groups. Before you buy, verify which countries you need. Europe-only bundles exclude destinations such as South Africa, the US, and Australia. Check whether the Extra charges per minute or offers a fixed allowance.

Activation usually happens within seconds. Vodafone advises waiting up to 15 minutes before placing your first call. If the call still fails after that window, restart your phone to force a network refresh.

International calling is not roaming

These are separate services. International calling means dialling abroad while you remain in the UK. Roaming means using your phone when you travel outside the UK. Each requires its own Extra.

If you are in Birmingham and want to call Johannesburg, you need an international call add-on. If you are in Johannesburg and want to ring your family in Birmingham, you need roaming switched on. Buying the wrong Extra is a common mistake.

Dialling format: the detail that breaks calls

Always use the international format: plus sign (+), country code, then the local number with its leading zero removed. For South Africa, dial +27 then the number. For a UK mobile starting 07, dial +44 7 and drop the zero. Incorrect formatting will cause the call to fail even when your account is correctly configured. Many people forget to remove the leading zero, which sends the call to a non-existent number.

What to do when calls still fail

Ring 191 from your Vodafone mobile (the call is free). Ask the adviser to confirm the Extra is showing as active and that no outgoing call bar remains on your account. You can also check this yourself in the My Vodafone app under Plan details.

If both look correct but calls continue to fail, request a line check. Occasionally, account-level blocks persist after an add-on purchase and require a manual reset on Vodafone's system. One specific scenario: if you recently switched from Pay As You Go to a monthly contract, old PAYG restrictions sometimes carry over. The adviser can clear these in a few minutes.

What you will actually pay

Vodafone's international Extras come in four main bands. The cheapest covers landlines and mobiles in Western Europe. Mid-tier options add North America, Australia, and parts of Asia. The top tier includes nearly every country but costs significantly more per month. Calls outside your chosen bundle are charged at standard international rates, which can reach £1.50 per minute for some destinations. Always check the rate card before dialling a country not listed in your Extra.

Using Wi-Fi calling as an alternative

If you have a stable internet connection, Wi-Fi calling can bypass the need for an international Extra altogether. Calls to UK numbers over Wi-Fi come out of your standard allowance, even if the person you are calling is abroad.

The catch: both you and the recipient must be on a network that supports Wi-Fi calling, and the feature must be enabled on both handsets. It works well for regular calls to one or two countries but is less practical if you dial many different destinations. Vodafone's Wi-Fi calling page lists compatible handsets and setup instructions.

Checking your account before you call

Before placing an international call, open the My Vodafone app and navigate to Plan details. Look for the international Extra under Active add-ons. If it does not appear there, the Extra has not been applied to your account. You can also dial 191 and ask the automated system to read back your active Extras. This takes 30 seconds and confirms whether the add-on is live.

If you see the Extra listed but calls still fail, the issue is likely formatting or a residual call bar. Work through the dialling format checks above, then ring 191 if the problem persists.

Frequently asked questions

why can't I make international calls on Vodafone
International calling is switched off by default on Vodafone UK accounts and is not included in standard plans. You need to add an international calling Extra to your account through the My Vodafone app, vodafone.co.uk, or by calling 191. If you hear a recorded message when dialling abroad, it's because no international Extra is active on your account.
how do I activate international calls Vodafone
Log into My Vodafone (app or website), go to Plan and Extras, and search for international call add-ons. Vodafone offers several tiers covering different destinations, so check which Extra suits your needs before purchasing. Once activated, you'll be able to dial internationally without further changes.
how to call South Africa from Vodafone UK
South Africa is not covered by Vodafone's cheapest Europe-focused international bundles, so you'll need to add a wider international calling Extra to your account. Check the coverage on Vodafone's international call Extras page to confirm South Africa is included in your chosen plan before activating it.
how do I turn on roaming with Vodafone
To activate roaming on Vodafone, use the My Vodafone app or log in at vodafone.co.uk and enable roaming in your settings. If you're having trouble, you can also call 191 for assistance. Note that roaming is different from international calling-roaming lets you use your phone abroad, while international calling lets you ring other countries from the UK.
can I remove international call block on Vodafone
If international calling has been manually blocked on your account (sometimes by a previous holder or parental controls), call 191 and ask Vodafone to remove the restriction. This is the quickest way to restore access if the block isn't due to a missing international Extra.
