What Vodafone’s parental controls actually offer
Vodafone provides parental controls for home broadband customers through two main systems: Web Safe, a network-level content filter managed online, and the router admin interface, which lets you control individual devices connected to your Wi-Fi.
Web Safe works at the network level, meaning it applies to every device in your home without needing to install anything on individual phones, tablets, or laptops. It filters content by category (adult material, gambling, violence, and similar) and allows you to add or remove specific websites from the filter list.
The router admin interface gives you more granular control: you can block or allow specific devices by their MAC address, set time schedules for internet access, and pause a device’s connection entirely.
According to Ofcom’s research on children’s media use, 97% of children aged 3 to 17 in the UK live in a household with internet access, making home broadband controls one of the most practical first steps for families. The UK’s Online Safety Act also places new duties on platforms to protect children, but network-level filters remain the parent’s responsibility to configure.
How to manage Web Safe through My Vodafone
Web Safe is Vodafone’s network-level content filter and is the easiest place to start for most households.
- Go to vodafone.co.uk and sign in to your My Vodafone account.
- Navigate to My Services (sometimes listed as Services in the top menu).
- Select My Web Safe.
- From here you can choose filter categories to block, add specific URLs to your blocked or allowed list, or turn the filter off entirely if you no longer need it.
Changes to Web Safe normally take effect within a few minutes across your whole home network. You do not need to restart your router.
If you want to unblock a site that Web Safe has blocked, the same menu lets you add it to an exceptions (allowed) list. This is useful for sites that are incorrectly categorised by the filter, such as some health information or educational platforms.
How to use the My Vodafone app for parental controls
The My Vodafone app (available on iOS and Android) provides access to most of the same broadband management features as the web portal, including Web Safe settings.
- Download the My Vodafone app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign in with your Vodafone account credentials.
- Tap Broadband or My Services depending on your app version.
- Select Parental Controls or Web Safe.
- Adjust your filter settings as needed. A 4-digit PIN can be set to prevent others in the household from changing the settings without authorisation.
The app is particularly useful if you want to make quick changes while away from a laptop, for example, if you need to unblock a site your child needs for homework without being at home.
How to set parental controls through your Vodafone router
For device-level controls (blocking a specific phone or tablet rather than the whole network), you need to log in to your router’s admin interface directly.
- Open a web browser on a device connected to your Vodafone broadband.
- Type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar and press Enter. This is the default address for most Vodafone routers, including the Super Hub range.
- Log in using the admin credentials printed on your router (usually on a label on the side or base).
- Navigate to the Security or Access Control section.
- From here you can:
- View all devices currently connected to your network.
- Block a specific device by its MAC address.
- Set a schedule so that internet access is only available during certain hours (useful for children’s devices at bedtime).
- Restrict which websites a specific device can visit.
If you have a Vodafone Super Hub 2ac or later model, you can also reach the Device Manager by going to the Attached Devices tab and then selecting Access Control. Enter the MAC address of the device you want to restrict, set your rules, and click Apply.
Note: If your router’s admin address does not work at 192.168.1.1, check the label on the device as some models use a different default address, or consult Internet Matters’ Vodafone setup guide which is kept up to date for different router models.
Adding device-level controls alongside Vodafone’s network filter
Network-level filters like Web Safe are a useful baseline, but they can be bypassed if a child connects a device to a different network, such as mobile data or a friend’s Wi-Fi. For more complete protection, combine Vodafone’s controls with device-level tools.
For Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac): Use Screen Time, found in Settings. You can set content restrictions by age rating, block specific apps, and set daily time limits. Screen Time can be protected with a separate passcode.
For Android devices: Google Family Link (free) lets parents approve app downloads, set screen time limits, and view activity reports. It works across Android phones and tablets.
For Windows computers: Windows includes Microsoft Family Safety under account settings, which allows content filters, screen time management, and spending limits on the Microsoft Store.
For all devices: Consider setting your router’s DNS to a family-friendly DNS provider such as Cloudflare for Families (1.1.1.3) or CleanBrowsing. This adds a further layer of filtering that operates independently of Vodafone’s own systems.
