Government's Campaign To Quell Worries Over Schools Only Fuels Labour Mockery

The government's efforts to alleviate concerns about the deteriorating condition of schools backfired when the Labour Party delivered a strong counterargument. Education Secretary Gillian Keegan took to platform X to share a poster boldly claiming that "most schools are unaffected" by the crisis surrounding reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC).

RAAC is an outdated form of concrete with a lifespan of approximately 30 years before it becomes at risk of collapsing. However, the exact number of schools impacted remains unknown, as some have yet to inform the government if they suspect the presence of RAAC.

With over 100 schools already closed due to safety concerns, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak admitted that up to 1,000 schools might have to shut temporarily while the situation is addressed.

The government's poster also promised a "dedicated caseworker for every affected school" and "rapid support for funding," but the Labour Party swiftly responded by remixing the poster with a Jaws joke, altering the slogan to "Most beachgoers not eaten by big shark." They even modified the department for education logo to "Mayor of Amity Island" and changed the "RAAC Update" to "Jaws Update."

The opposition's humorous adaptation quickly gained traction, accumulating over 8,000 likes on platform X in less than two hours. Other users on platform X also heavily criticized the government's poster.

"'Most schools unaffected.' Which implies up to 50% may be affected. (It's very unlikely to be this high of course.) And no indication of what that means - is your school's roof about to cave in (literally)?" Link to Tweet
