The European Commission has identified Apple, parent company Alphabet, and Meta Platforms as companies fallin under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which governs core online services. The companies have been given six months to comply with the new legislation.

In addition to Apple and Alphabet, Amazon, TikTok parent ByteDance, and Microsoft have also been classified as gatekeepers providing crucial services that connect businesses and consumers.

The assignment of these roles comes after a 45-day evaluation period during which the companies, including Samsung, submitted their assessments to the Commission.

Some of the online services identified by the regulator in the tech giants category include Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems, as well as Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, App Store, and Google Play.

Compliance with the Digital Markets Act

The companies designated as gatekeepers must adhere to a comprehensive set of rules outlined in the DMA. The majority of requirements must be implemented within a six-month timeline.

1. Allowing third-party interoperability in specific situations
2. Providing access to data generated on platforms
3. Not giving preference to a gatekeeper's own services over others
4. Offering the ability for users to remove preinstalled software or apps

The European Commission has the authority to impose fines of up to 10% of a company's global revenue for non-compliance, potentially increasing to 20% for repeated violations. In addition, the Commission may use additional measures, such as forcing a gatekeeper to divest part or all of its business.

Separate investigations have been initiated to determine whether Apple's iMessage or iPad operating systems should also be subject to the rules defined by the DMA.
