IBM Unveils AI Assistant to Transform COBOL Code and Sells The Weather Company
Revolutionizing COBOL Code with watsonx AI
IBM introduces watsonx, an advanced AI model that aims to modernize COBOL code and enhance developer productivity.

IBM's latest generative AI creation, watsonx, is set to revolutionize the coding process by translating COBOL code to Java.
The tool is specifically designed for IBM Z and is expected to be released by the end of 2023, with a preview scheduled for IBM's TechXchange conference in Las Vegas next month.
Despite being one of the oldest programming languages still in use today, COBOL plays a critical role in various business and operational processes globally, including ATM swipes and banking systems.1

With **billions of lines** of COBOL code in existence, IBM's watsonx aims to modernize it into higher-quality Java code, offering developers a selective and incremental transformation process.
"The code assistant takes a targeted and optimized approach," says Dr Kareem Yusuf, senior VP of product management and growth at IBM Software. "It rapidly and accurately converts code optimized for IBM Z, accelerating time to market and broadening the skills pool. This can help enhance applications and add new capabilities while preserving the performance, resiliency, and security inherent in IBM Z."1
The watsonx AI assistant boasts an impressive 20 billion parameters and extensive knowledge of 115 coding languages, acquired from learning 1.5 trillion tokens.

IBM Sells The Weather Company
IBM optimizes its business by divesting The Weather Company, a leading provider of accurate weather data.
IBM has finalized the sale of The Weather Company, which offers weather data services to consumers and businesses, to Francisco Partners, a global investment company specializing in partnering with technology businesses.
The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Over 415 million individuals utilize The Weather Company's services each month, making it a major player in the weather forecast industry.2
IBM's Senior VP of Software and Chief Communication Officer, Rob Thomas, explains that the sale aligns with IBM's strategic focus on hybrid cloud and AI technologies. "We're confident that the best path forward for The Weather Company is as a standalone company benefiting from Francisco Partners' expanded investment, dedication, and expertise," adds Thomas.2
