O'Carroll's remarks were made during the inaugural Eyes-Off Data Summit 2023, organized by Irish start-up Oblivious AI and data security platform Antigranular. The event, held at the Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin’s Docklands, gathered international experts who discussed the responsible use of AI and data.

Addressing data breaches, O’Carroll highlighted that human error is the leading cause. He emphasized that organizations need to have control over their own technologies, as governance and technology control play a crucial role in preventing data breaches. O'Carroll warned that data privacy investigations can have a devastating impact on organizations.

Regarding the recent EU adequacy decision for safe data transfers with the US, O’Carroll expressed skepticism, noting that federal law in the US has not changed and that national security laws are more extreme compared to Europe.

He also warned against 'privacy-washing' GDPR certifications from commercial organizations, stating that official GDPR certifications do not exist.

Jack Fitzsimons, co-founder of Oblivious AI and host of the summit, emphasized the importance of data privacy in the advancing field of AI. He discussed the challenges faced by professionals such as data scientists, lawyers, compliance officers, businesses, and consumers, and highlighted the need for privacy enhancing technologies (PETs) as a solution.

Oblivious AI, founded in 2020, develops tools that enable data scientists and machine learning models to work on sensitive data while maintaining confidentiality and ensuring trust between businesses.
