‘May December’ ‘Dumb Money’ ‘Past Lives’ at San Sebastian Festival

The San Sebastian film festival has once again curated a selection of highly-anticipated films for its Perlak sidebar. Perlak showcases recent critically acclaimed movies that have not yet been released in Spain. The lineup for the 2023 Perlak includes Celine Song’s Sundance hit Past Lives, Maite Alberdi’s Grand Jury winner The Eternal Memory, Christian Petzold’s Berlin breakout Afire, and Cannes sensations The Zone of Interest from Jonathan Glazer, Todd Haynes’s May December, Aki Kaurismäki’s Fallen Leaves, Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days, Warwick Thornton’s The New Boy, Hirokazu Kore-eda's Monster, and Justine Triet's Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall.

The Perlak section will conclude with the out-of-competition screening of Les indésirables, the latest social drama by French director Ladj Ly (Les Misérables), and Dumb Money, a comedy by Australian filmmaker Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya), which tells the story of the GameStop short squeeze drama and stars Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, and Shailene Woodley. From the Venice Film Festival, San Sebastian will showcase Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Evil Does Not Exist, director Nikolaj Arcel’s Danish period drama The Promised Land starring Mads Mikkelsen, Matteo Garrone’s refugee drama Io Capitano, and Michel Franco’s Memory starring Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard.

All movies in the Perlak section, except the closing film, will be eligible for San Sebastian’s Audience Awards, including the prestigious best film honor and the best European film prize, which will be voted on by the festival viewers. The 71st edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival will take place from September 22-30.
