UN Calls For Ceasefire In Gaza, Infuriating Israel
The ongoing Israel-Hamas war has sparked tensions between Tel Aviv and the United Nations (UN), with the situation threatening to escalate.
Following Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, which resulted in the hostage-taking of at least 200 people, Tel Aviv declared war and imposed a siege on the Gaza Strip.

According to estimates from the Gaza Health Ministry and the Israeli government, over 1,400 people in Israel and over 6,500 people in Palestine have been killed since the conflict began.Associated Press
While some leaders maintain that Israel has the right to protect its population, others are calling for Tel Aviv to adhere to international law.
UN Secretary General's Statement

In a speech to the UN Security Council, Secretary General Antonio Guterres acknowledged that the Hamas attack "did not happen in a vacuum."
He emphasized that the Palestinians have endured 56 years of oppressive occupation, but condemned the "appalling attacks by Hamas" as well as the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.
Guterres called for the immediate release of all hostages and urged for more humanitarian aid to be provided to Gaza, while emphasizing the importance of protecting civilians.UN Press Release

Israel's Response
Eli Cohen, Israel's Ministry for Foreign Affairs, held up a collage of photos of the Hamas hostages during the Security Council meeting, referring to them as victims of evil.
He described the October 7 attack as orchestrated by "new Nazis", urging the international community to support Israel in its fight against terrorism.

Aftermath of the Meeting
Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, criticized Guterres' speech, calling it "shocking" and demanding the secretary-general's resignation.
Erdan further accused the UN of distorted and immoral views on the massacre committed by Hamas and announced that Israel would ban UN representatives from entering the country. The Guardian

The Times of Israel described Erdan's actions as an "unusually harsh break" between Israel and the UN leadership.
Furthermore, Cohen announced that he would no longer meet with Guterres, and the Israeli government refused to issue visas to UN representatives, starting with the undersecretary general for humanitarian affairs, Martin Griffiths.
Griffiths had emphasized the need for increased aid to Gaza and called for a ceasefire to address the humanitarian crisis in the region.Politico
