Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream: an Abba-themed musical TV contest? The prospect is horrific
Do you enjoy musical theatre? How about watching people sing enthusiastically, with dramatic facial expressions, fast dance moves, and intense eye contact with the camera? If you find these things exciting, then you might love the new competition show called Mamma Mia! I Have a Dream. In this ITV1 series, 14 theatrical individuals compete for the lead roles in the West End production of the long-running musical Mamma Mia!.
Kate Ferdinand Goes Pumpkin Picking with Newborn Baby Shae and FamilyThe contestants, consisting of seven women named Stephanie and seven men named Callum, have been taken to Greece to recreate the iconic song-and-dance numbers from the Mamma Mia! movie. Celebrity judges Amber Riley, Samantha Barks, Jessie Ware, and Alan Carr assess their performances. While this might sound fun to some, it personally horrifies me.

It's worth mentioning that the UK has a peculiar obsession with Abba. Their albums were released in the '80s, and the musical has been running for over 25 years. Yet, we continue to indulge in Abba-related content. We even constructed a £140 million arena in east London to showcase daily Abba hologram shows. And now, this TV contest. How many times can we watch someone sing "Waterloo" before it becomes tiresome?

Reminiscent of the group performances on past seasons of The X Factor, Mamma Mia! features multiple contestants singing simultaneously, all competing against each other. It's entertaining to witness these performers try to outshine one another, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea. If you're eager to watch yet another rendition of "Dancing Queen," then this show is perfect for you. Just be prepared for numerous Saturdays filled with Abba tunes.
