Masterson, known for his role in the TV show "That '70s Show", was recently sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted of rape. Kutcher and Kunis, who starred alongside Masterson on the show, maintained a close relationship with him even after it ended in 2006. They later worked together on Netflix's sitcom "The Ranch" until Masterson was fired in 2017 due to sexual assault allegations.

Character letters written by Kutcher and Kunis were made public on Friday, in which they referred to Masterson as a "role model" and praised his parenting skills. However, their support for Masterson caused backlash on social media, with many criticizing them for standing by someone convicted of rape while claiming to support victims through their own projects, such as Kutcher's anti-human trafficking organization Thorn and Kunis' role in the film "Luckiest Girl Alive", where she portrays a rape survivor.

In response, Kutcher and Kunis released the Instagram video to clarify their intentions and apologize. They explained that the letters were written a few months ago at the request of Masterson's family, who asked them to provide character references to the judge. The couple emphasized that the letters were not meant to question the judicial system or undermine the victims' testimony, but rather to provide a personal perspective on the person they had known for 25 years.

Kutcher concluded by expressing remorse if the letters caused any harm or retraumatization to the victims, and Kunis extended their sympathy to all survivors of sexual assault and abuse.

In addition to Kutcher and Kunis, other actors from "That '70s Show" including Kurtwood Smith, Debra Jo Rupp, and Giovanni Ribisi, as well as Masterson's brother-in-law Billy Baldwin, also wrote letters on his behalf.
