Jamie Dornan Failed Superman Audition, Knew Critics Hated Fifty Shades

During a recent episode of the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, Jamie Dornan revealed that he was well-aware of the criticism surrounding the "Fifty Shades of Grey" films before accepting the role of Christian Grey. Despite the negative reviews, the trilogy managed to gross $1.3 billion globally. Dornan initially auditioned for the role but lost out to Charlie Hunnam, who later dropped out, giving Dornan another chance.

Reflecting on his decision, Dornan expressed mixed feelings, stating, "When I didn't get it, I felt a bit of relief because I knew that guy is going to get wrecked here... I got cast five weeks before we started filming. I knew that it came with all that baggage... that the reality was it would make a ton of money and the fans would love it and the critics would despise it."

On Dealing with Critics and Fan Reception

Acknowledging the contrasting views, Dornan emphasized that movies made for fans can still be considered successful. He expressed gratitude for the positive response to his work with co-star Dakota Johnson and how some critics have changed their opinions. "I'm grateful that Dakota and I have managed to come out [in the years since] and make work that people still like and have had some of those said critics do a bit of a 180," he added.

Aside from the "Fifty Shades" franchise, Dornan disclosed that he has rarely auditioned for superhero roles. However, he revealed one exception - an audition for the role of Superman in Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel." Ultimately, Henry Cavill secured the iconic part. Recalling the experience, Dornan humorously mentioned wearing his own Superman pajamas during the audition, stating, "I remember an early audition for that. I got nowhere near putting the [real] suit on... I've had meetings with heads of studios that do those things and would talk about it, but I never got deep in any audition process for them."

Currently, Dornan can be seen alongside Gal Gadot in Netflix's "Heart of Stone."
