Chrissie Hynde Finally Accepts Responsibility for Band Members' Deaths

The lead singer of The Pretenders, Chrissie Hynde, has recently admitted to feeling guilt over the deaths of her band members, Pete Farndon and James Honeyman-Scott, back in the 1980s. In an interview with Record Collector, Hynde confessed that she did not discourage their drug use, which ultimately led to their tragic deaths. Farndon passed away in 1983 at the age of 30 due to heroin overdose, while Honeyman-Scott died a year earlier at 25 due to heart failure resulting from cocaine intolerance.

Acknowledging Guilt and Responsibility

Hynde acknowledged her guilt, stating, "I am guilty. It’s not a big word if you are guilty. It’s big if you feel guilty and you’re not guilty. But if you really are guilty, then you should put your hand up and say, ‘Guilty as charged'". She accepted her part in the drug-taking culture within the band, admitting, "Well, I didn’t discourage the drug-taking, and I was part of it. So, you know, not that I was their mother, and we went on the road, and it was very hardcore."

The Grim Consequences

In June 1982, Farndon was fired from the band due to his heroin addiction, and just two days later, Honeyman-Scott tragically passed away from heart failure attributed to cocaine intolerance. The following April, Farndon's life was also lost after succumbing to a heroin overdose. Reflecting on this dark period, Hynde expressed, "I was having problems with Pete, so perhaps not guilty, but there’s an element of wishing you’d done better."

The Fate of The Pretenders

After these devastating losses, Hynde and drummer Martin Chambers were the only surviving members of the band. As a result, new members were recruited, including Rockpile guitarist Billy Bremner and Big Country bassist Tony Butler as temporary replacements. Eventually, Robbie McIntosh joined on guitar, and Malcolm Foster joined on bass. Hynde laments, "Since Pete and Jimmy died and because I’ve had to replace people, it’s now kind of like a Pretenders tribute band, named The Pretenders."
