A moving homage and tea-time tears for Len Goodman
On the latest episode of the ratings juggernaut, Strictly Come Dancing, a new batch of contestants took to the dance floor, showcasing daring twirls and plucky pirouettes. Among the celebrities making their debut were newsreaders Angela Rippon and Krishnan Guru-Murthy, comedian Les Dennis, former tennis pro Annabel Croft, and EastEnders actor Bobby Brazier, who happens to be the son of the late Jade Goody and the bookies' favorite to win.

While their dance journey has just begun, the competitors wasted no time in getting their feet moving. Judge Du Beke expressed his excitement, declaring, "The children are back at school, the world is right again - Strictly is back on the telly!" The audience showered Rippon with thunderous applause as she learned that her pro dance partner would be Kai Widdrington.

Rippon, at 78 years old, made history as the oldest-ever contestant on the series. Notably, she has come full circle, having previously hosted the predecessor of Strictly, Come Dancing. Reflecting on her transition from hosting to dancing, Rippon shared, "It's weird not being in your place and being in this place, but I'm going to enjoy it, I think."

Meanwhile, Dennis, the second oldest participant, acknowledged that his age might present some challenges. "I'm touching 70 - lifts are going to be a problem," he humorously informed his pro partner Nancy Xu.

Strictly Come Dancing remains a beloved family entertainment show for the BBC. With the 2023 lineup featuring familiar faces like Rippon, the broadcaster hopes to strike a chord with both long-time viewers and the TikTok generation. Last year's final saw a decline in viewership by around two million compared to the previous year, making any further decrease a cause for concern.
