SNP Considers Pursuing Independence Despite Loss of MPs

The Scottish National Party (SNP) is considering the possibility of seeking independence from the UK, even if they lose several MPs in the upcoming general election. At their autumn conference in Aberdeen, SNP delegates agreed that having a majority of Scottish MPs in Westminster would be sufficient to initiate negotiations with the UK government. This means that their target is to have a minimum of 29 MPs, even though it would be 14 fewer than their current count. Additionally, under the Westminster voting system, they could attain this number with less than 40% of the vote.

The new policy marks a departure from the previous stance of SNP leader Humza Yousaf, who believed that simply having the most Scottish MPs would be enough to begin talks on Scottish independence. Former SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon had envisioned the next election as a de facto referendum, where more than 50% of votes for pro-independence parties would secure Scotland's departure from the UK. However, Yousaf abandoned this strategy when he took over as leader in March.

Yousaf called on the party to unite and work diligently towards securing a better future for Scotland. However, critics such as Shadow Scottish secretary Ian Murray argue that the SNP's focus on independence is a distraction from more pressing issues, including the soaring cost of living and strained public services.
