Sir Lenny Henry, speaking at the National Television Awards, emphasized that although progress is being made in the TV industry with regards to diversity, the fight for equality is far from over. He noted the increasing visibility of people of color, individuals with disabilities, and those with tattoos in various roles within the industry. Sir Lenny pointed out that true change will only occur when individuals from diverse backgrounds are given the opportunity to produce programs, highlighting the importance of diversifying power structures in television. He also suggested that production companies should establish clear guidelines on acceptable behavior to better support talent.

NTAs and the ongoing fight for diversity

During the National Television Awards, Sir Lenny Henry shared his perspective on the continuing battle for diversity within the TV industry. He acknowledged the positive changes that have taken place in recent years, such as increased representation of people from marginalized communities. However, he cautioned against complacency and emphasized that real progress will only occur when individuals from diverse backgrounds are given the opportunity to lead and produce programs. "There’s a lot of change happening," Sir Lenny Henry said, "I see more people with disabilities doing stuff, I see more people with tattoos. I think there’s a lot of change happening, just in the last five years but, don’t let anybody be thinking that it’s over. Because the fight and, it is a fight, is something that’s ongoing." These comments were made during Meera Syal’s Alternative MacTaggart discussion at the Edinburgh TV Festival, where the focus was on the need for fundamental changes in power structures to accompany surface-level diversity representation in the industry.

Regarding the National Television Awards, Sir Lenny Henry expressed his belief that true progress will only be achieved when individuals from marginalized communities are given meaningful opportunities behind the cameras. He echoed Meera Syal’s sentiments that diversity cannot be mere "window dressing" but needs to permeate every level of production and decision-making. Sir Lenny also suggested that production companies should establish a written manifesto outlining unacceptable behaviors to ensure a safe and inclusive working environment.
