Russia is significantly increasing its military spending while reducing budgets for education and health, amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

In the latest intelligence update by the UK's Ministry of Defence (MoD), it was revealed that the Russian government is increasingly directing its spending towards the costs of the war.

Projections for 2024 indicate that the Kremlin plans to increase defence spending by 68% compared to this year, reaching around 6% of Russia's gross domestic product (GDP). In comparison, the UK spends approximately 2% of its GDP on defence.

The MoD stated that additional funding will be necessary to support healthcare costs and payments for the increasing number of wounded soldiers and the families of those who lost their lives in the conflict.

In a separate intelligence briefing, the UK government disclosed that the number of Russian casualties in the war is nearing 300,000, with nearly 200,000 either killed or permanently injured.

The MoD warned that the surge in military spending could also have adverse effects on the Russian economy, contributing to rising inflation. Additionally, continued increases in military expenditure may place financial pressures on Russian businesses.
