Orphan Kay Harker discovers a magical box with transformative powers in John Masefield’s 1935 novel, and now the Royal Shakespeare Company brings this enchanting tale to life on stage. With bold video designs, aerial sequences, puppetry, a talented cast, and an eight-piece band, this production captures the essence of Masefield’s fantasy world. While some of the rich storytelling may be lost in translation, the show remains a well-crafted homage to Masefield's legacy.

Piers Torday’s adaptation of Masefield's novel stays true to its idiosyncratic language and whimsical charm. It adds doses of comedy, delightful musical interludes, and a modern-day framing device that emphasizes the importance of family. Director Justin Audibert creates a warm and captivating atmosphere, complemented by Samuel Wyer’s remarkable puppetry and stunning set designs. While some elements from the original story are missing, this production offers a delightful journey into Masefield's magical world.
