7 Things We Learned From The Rolling Stones' Hackney Diamonds Press Conference

After a long wait of almost two decades, the Rolling Stones have finally confirmed that they are releasing new original music.

Last month, speculation about their comeback began after a cryptic advert was posted in the Hackney Gazette for a mysterious company named Hackney Diamonds, which turned out to be the band's new album.

The band officially announced the album, their first of original material in 18 years and their first since the death of drummer Charlie Watts in 2021, at a press event held in East London.

First of all, the Rolling Stones have confirmed a new album and a brand new single called Angry

"We're here to present our new single," Mick Jagger teased at the beginning of the Q&A, revealing that Angry would be the lead single from Hackney Diamonds, to be released on 20th October. Mick also mentioned that there are around 22 tracks on the album.

What else do we know about the Rolling Stones' new album Hackney Diamonds?

The album consists of 12 songs, including Angry, Get Close, Depending On You, Bite My Head Off, Whole Wide World, Dreamy Skies, Mess It Up, Live By The Sword, Driving Me Too Hard, Tell Me Straight, Sweet Sound Of Heaven, and Rolling Stone Blues. Mick described the album as a mixture of "anger and disgust" along with "love songs", "ballads", and some country-inspired tracks. Keith Richards highlighted the "funky riffs" on Angry and Whole Wide World, and Mick hinted that Sweet Sound Of Heaven was inspired by gospel music.

It was revealed that Lady Gaga lent her voice to Sweet Sound Of Heaven, and she was praised by Jimmy Fallon for her stunning performance on the track.

The recording of the new album was quick

The band shared that they gathered ideas for the album just before Christmas last year, and then quickly recorded and finished the 23 tracks by Valentine's Day. The songwriting and recording initially took place between Mick and Keith in Jamaica, and later Ronnie joined them on both the East and West Coast of the USA.

The meaning behind Hackney Diamonds

The band explained that the title Hackney Diamonds was a variation of the ideas they had, such as Hit And Run and Smash And Grab. They also mentioned that since they are a London band, Hackney Diamonds represents the broken windscreen after a Saturday night in Hackney.

Two tracks feature Charlie Watts

Although drummer Charlie Watts is sadly no longer with the band, his drumming was recorded for the tracks Mess It Up and Live By The Sword in 2019. Original Rolling Stones member Bill Wyman also features on Live By The Sword.
