In order to reduce energy consumption and focus on the expansion of 4G and 5G networks, Virgin Media O2 intends to begin shutting down its 3G sites in 2025.

Over the past few years, the usage of 3G has steadily declined, accounting for less than 4% of data carried on the network in 2022.

Despite the low usage, the 3G network still consumes 11% of the operator's total energy consumption.

Virgin Media O2's 4G network already provides coverage to 99% of the population, with plans to make 5G accessible to half of the population by the end of this year.

In accordance with government regulations, voice calls and SMS services will continue to be available through the 2G network until its eventual shutdown in 2033.

CTO Jeanie York stated that the company will reach out to customers to provide guidance on any necessary actions to be taken in the next 18 months, but most customers will not be affected.

Virgin Media O2 is the last of the four major operators in the UK to announce a timeline for the discontinuation of 3G.

BT Group and 3 UK are targeting 2024 for their 3G shutdowns, while Vodafone UK has already begun the process and aims to complete it by early 2024.
