Rambo 6 Gets Encouraging But Cautious Update From Producers

Summary

  • Producers are open to the idea of making a Rambo 6 if there is a demand from the fan base and the right conditions are met.
  • Sylvester Stallone may be too old to realistically play an action hero in another Rambo film, so a prequel with a new actor could be a more realistic option.
  • While Rambo: Last Blood gave the character an appropriate ending, if fans and financiers want a return, the producers are willing to make Rambo 6 and find a way to bring the character back.

Producers give a positive but cautious update on Rambo 6, saying it could still happen, under certain conditions. Sylvester Stallone followed up his 1976 Rocky triumph by introducing a second iconic movie character in John Rambo, an embittered and violent Vietnam vet first seen in the 1982 film First Blood. Like Rocky Balboa, Rambo would become a constant in Stallone’s career, returning for further adventures in 1985, 1988, and 2008 before delivering his apparent swan song in 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood.

But Rambo may in fact not have drawn blood for the last time in that 2019 film, according to producers Kevin King-Templeton and Les Weldon. Speaking to Coming Soon about their new Stallone-led action movie Expendables 4, the duo discussed the possibility of resurrecting the star’s most famous action movie character, and indicated they both have interest, though certain conditions would have to be met for them to consider going forward. Check out what Weldon had to say:

"The same. Rambo. I mean, there’s several different franchises that we’re on, and we’re thinking about for the future. And as well as new projects. You know, it’s, again, it becomes a matter of if, if there is a demand from the fan base, we’ll be the first ones to jump on there, which is why Expendables is happening again. Sometimes Kevin and I will say, “well, I don’t know if there’s gonna be another.” And then the demand comes up, and people are asking, and asking and asking. Buyers are asking, and that was the case with this. And so we took this very seriously to develop this, you know, so that we would do it right. And yeah. And give them something they wanted."

Rambo: Last Blood Gave The Character An Appropriate Ending

It could indeed emerge that fans, and financiers, both desire another Rambo sequel, prompting producers to embark on developing such a project. Whether that film would star Stallone is, of course, another question entirely. At 77, the star may finally be too old to realistically play an action hero. The 81-year-old Harrison Ford was, of course, de-aged for his own return to a famous action franchise in this summer's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but de-aging is expensive, and Rambo 6 would not have Disney money behind it.

A more realistic option for resurrecting the character might be a Rambo prequel, with a new actor depicting a young pre-First Blood version of the character. Stallone himself has indeed addressed this possibility, pitching an idea that would explore the character's early life and traumatizing Vietnam experiences. As for the older iteration of the character, he already received an appropriate send-off via Last Blood, which saw him surviving one last battle before the film treated the audience to a stirring montage of highlights from the long-running franchise. Leaving the character there would be the best move from a story standpoint, but it seems that if fans and money people call for a return, producers will be up for making Rambo 6 and resurrecting the character one way or another.
