Prince William's Surprising Act in New York Leaves New Yorkers Awestruck

Prince William touched down in New York on Monday and immediately embarked on an unconventional venture.

The Prince of Wales walked into the East River, donning waders, with the stunning Manhattan skyline as the backdrop.

While most New Yorkers avoid contact with the water, William's purpose was to support the Billion Oyster Project. The nonprofit aims to restore a billion oysters to the New York Harbor by 2035.

According to Agata Poniatowski, the public outreach manager for the Billion Oyster Project, the Prince's immersion in the water was significant. Poniatowski joined William in the water and described him as "really, really excited" about the activity.

On Monday, the Prince's engagement with the organization began with a boat ride to Governor's Island immediately after his flight from the UK.

During his time on the island, he met with restaurateurs, volunteers, staff, and students involved in the project. Later, he proceeded to Brooklyn Bridge Park, where he immersed himself in the water to observe the oysters.

Subsequently, he met with 12-year-old students from Harbor Middle School and measured the oysters together.

Prince William is currently in New York as part of his environmental initiative, The Earthshot Prize. The finalists for this year's awards will be announced on Tuesday at the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit, co-hosted by Michael Bloomberg's Bloomberg Philanthropies.

During his visit to New York, which coincides with New York Climate Week, the Prince met with the UN secretary-general on Monday, ahead of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

Expressing his delight at being back in the United States, the Prince said, "No one does optimism and ingenuity like the American people, so it's only right we unveil this year's Earthshot finalists in New York City."

William is also expected to meet with first responders in Manhattan on Tuesday, where he will discuss their work and mental health. The Prince, who previously served as an emergency first responder during his time as a helicopter pilot, empathizes with the importance of this visit occurring a few days after the September 11 attacks.

The Prince's previous New York visit was in 2014, accompanied by his wife, Kate Middleton.

Last year, both the Prince and Princess of Wales visited Boston, where they attended the 2022 Earthshot Prize ceremony. Upon his arrival in Boston, the Prince contributed an exclusive essay for HuffPost, expressing his stance as a "stubborn optimist" regarding the Earth's future.
