Nadine Dorries Faces Backlash for Suggesting Michael Gove Was Intoxicated

UK Politician Nadine Dorries has come under fire for insinuating that Michael Gove may have been under the influence of alcohol during an encounter with pro-Palestine demonstrators in central London.

As Gove, the current levelling up secretary, made his way toward Victoria Station on a Saturday afternoon, he experienced heckling from the crowd. Onlookers chanted "shame on you" at Gove, and the situation escalated to the point where he needed to be escorted into a police vehicle for his safety.

It was reported that Gove had been traveling from his constituency in Surrey Heath back to London. However, with the roads being obstructed, he ultimately had to continue on foot. The encounter left him visibly "shaken."

Controversial Remarks on National Television

During an appearance on BBC One's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Dorries openly questioned Gove's presence at Victoria Station during the protests, asking, "Was he drunk? What was he doing there? What judgment made him walk through Victoria Station?"

In a subsequent statement on X (formerly known as Twitter), Dorries elaborated, suggesting that Gove was "playing to the gallery." She described the incident as a "stunt" and referenced Gove's past actions that she perceives as "unstable Machiavellian behaviour," including backstabbing and leaking information. This, she believes, has led former Prime Minister David Cameron to push him out of his inner circle.

Dorries' allusion to "The Plot," her book about Boris Johnson's downfall as prime minister, further underscores her critical stance on Gove's actions and character. Notably, Gove's ex-wife, Sarah Vine, also expressed disapproval of Dorries' statements.

Condemnations and Defence

Stephen Flynn, leader of the SNP in Westminster, criticized those targeting Gove during the protests. Countering claims of it being "bizarre" for Gove to navigate through central London at such a time, Flynn insisted that Gove has every right to utilize the transport hubs and should be able to do so in peace. He also emphasized that the behaviour of the protestors could potentially detract from their cause, particularly those expressing anti-Semitic views during the rally, warranting their condemnation.
