'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Live-Action Series Teaser Debuts

The cultures of the Water, Earth, Fire, and Air Nations will come together once more early next year.

Netflix has just dropped the eagerly awaited trailer for its Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series during Geeked Week's virtual event. This revealed a first glimpse at many beloved characters transitioning from the animated world to live-action, and it announced the much-anticipated premiere date of Feb. 22.

New footage introduces live-action versions of Aang (Gordon Cormier), Katara (Kiawentiio), Sokka (Ian Ousley), Prince Zuko (Dallas James Liu), Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim), Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), Princess Azula (Elizabeth Yu), and Commander Zhao (Ken Leung). Moreover, fans got their first look at Aang’s giant flying bison Appa, his animal sidekick Momo, Suki (Maria Zhang), and the Kyoshi Warriors.

"Time is a funny thing," a voice declares in the teaser. "The past, the future, it all gets mixed up. There's only one way to keep it straight. Always remember who you are."

Adapting an Animated Classic

Under the guidance of showrunner Albert Kim, the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender is set to retell the epic story of the animated series, first aired on Nickelodeon in 2005. The series has expanded into The Legend of Korra, comics, games, and now additional new animated ventures in progress, following an infamously critiqued movie by M. Night Shyamalan.

In a fantasy realm reminiscent of medieval times, individuals known as benders possess the ability to manipulate earth, air, fire, or water. The Avatar, who can master all four elements, is reborn cyclically to ensure global peace and harmony. The latest Avatar, a young airbender named Aang, emerges during a tumultuous period dominated by Fire Lord Ozai and his quest for control. Aided by friends, Aang embarks on a journey to master the elements and bring equilibrium to the world once more.

The trailer teases memorable scenes from the original series, reimagined for this adaptation. Highlights include the passage of Sozin's Comet, the Earth Kingdom’s metropolis Omashu, Katara and Sokka uncovering Aang encased in ice, dynamic displays of firebending, and more.

After the exit of the original creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, due to creative differences, Albert Kim now helms the series. The trailer above delivers a vibrant glimpse at animated characters reborn in the live-action setting.
