Ed Davey Urges Lib Dems To Topple Vulnerable Tory Blue Wall

Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, is calling on his party to bring down the "Blue Wall" of Tory seats in the south of England in order to remove Rishi Sunak from power at the next general election. During his keynote speech at the party's annual conference, Davey will emphasize that voters are desperate to get rid of the "out of touch" Conservatives. He will point to the Lib Dems' recent by-election victories as evidence that they are well-positioned to help oust Sunak from No.10.

Davey will claim that Prime Minister Boris Johnson is facing a dual challenge, with Labour aiming to regain the Red Wall seats in the north of England while the Lib Dems seek to establish a presence in the south and southwest. "We've shown that the next election won't be all about the Red Wall. It's about the Blue Wall too," Davey will state.

Over the last few years, we have taken significant strides in breaking down the Blue Wall. Our mission now is to demolish it completely," he adds. "The British people are desperate to see the back of this appalling, out-of-touch Conservative Government, and we are the ones who can make it happen."

In June 2021, the Lib Dems shocked many by defeating the Tories and overturning a 16,223-vote majority in Chesham and Amersham. The party is also putting up a fierce fight in the upcoming Mid Bedfordshire by-election, triggered after former Tory culture secretary Nadine Dorries resigned.

Davey will also criticize Chancellor Rishi Sunak, describing the government as "more like a bad TV soap opera" than a "functioning government." He will urge voters to "change the channel" and reject the "corruption of Boris Johnson, the chaos of Liz Truss, and the carelessness of Rishi Sunak."

The recent by-election victories have reinvigorated the morale of the Liberal Democrats, who have struggled to regain momentum since the 2015 election. If the next election results are close, the Lib Dems could once again hold the balance of power. While ruling out any potential alliance with the Conservatives, Davey has not closed the door on forming a government with Labour.
