Lenny Henry: Black history education should be more than just one month a year

As he discusses his new post-Windrush drama Three Little Birds, the comedian-turned-writer emphasizes the importance of a continuous education on black history.

While acknowledging the significance of Black History Month, Sir Lenny believes that black history should be integrated into children's education on a continual basis. He expresses, "Black kids are black all year round, they need to have a sense of what's been going on running as a seam all the way through their education, not just one month a year."

Sir Lenny highlights the importance of recognizing the contributions of all individuals to British society. He states, "Everybody has contributed to this country and making it what it is. Our favorite dish in Britain? Chicken tikka masala. Second favorite? Curry goat and rice. Third? Kebabs. Come on, you can't tell me that migration hasn't contributed to this country."

Three Little Birds, set in 1957, tells the story of three women who leave the Caribbean for the West Midlands in search of a new life. While the drama takes inspiration from Sir Lenny's mother's stories, he emphasizes that the characters in the show are fictional. He humorously adds, "This isn't my mother's story, okay? Because my family is very litigious, they will come and they will sue my backside. This is lots of people's stories...it's for all of us."
