Keir Starmer Refuses To Call For Israel-Hamas Ceasefire As Labour Backlash Grows
Keir Starmer has declined calls to support a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict as divisions within Labour deepen regarding his stance on the ongoing hostilities.
Several prominent figures within the party, including some frontbenchers, are urging their leader to demand an immediate end to the fighting, enabling crucial humanitarian aid to reach civilians in Gaza.
Moreover, over 150 Muslim Labour councillors have signed a letter today, appealing to the party leadership to endorse a ceasefire.

To address concerns, the Labour leader met with around a dozen Muslim Labour MPs, and it is speculated that two members of the shadow cabinet may resign due to this dispute.
According to insiders, the meeting was described as "constructive," and Starmer intends to continue engaging with party members to hear their perspectives.
In his statement, Starmer expressed support for US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's call for "humanitarian pauses" in the conflict to allow aid to reach Gaza.

"That is why we have consistently emphasized the urgent need to increase the delivery of aid, fuel, water, electricity, and medicine, both through the Rafah crossing and by reinstating Israel's control over the supplies it regulates.
"All parties bear the responsibility of ensuring that aid and resources not only enter Gaza but also reach those who require them. Therefore, we advocate for regular, swift, and secure deliveries. We appreciate Secretary Blinken's recent remarks and endorse the idea of humanitarian pauses.
"Ultimately, a lasting solution to this crisis can only be achieved through political means. Therefore, we must resume the arduous task of negotiations to establish a two-state solution, with a viable Palestinian state coexisting alongside a secure and safe Israel."

"The issue here is that some individuals are using it as a means to undermine Keir, which is disgraceful given the gravity of this matter," they added.
In a further indication of divisions within Labour, shadow equalities minister Yasmin Qureshi deviated from the party's official position on a ceasefire during prime minister's questions.
Qureshi inquired, "How many more innocent Palestinians must die before this prime minister calls for a humanitarian ceasefire?

Additionally, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar accused Israel of violating international law, a stance that Starmer has refused to adopt.
Regarding Sarwar's position, Starmer's spokesperson stated, "Anas is entitled to his views."
Furthermore, Starmer has witnessed at least 19 Labour councillors resign from the party due to this issue.
