South Korea's Plans to Upgrade Network Infrastructure for Digital Transformation
LIVE FROM GSMA M360 APAC, SEOUL: South Korea's Vice Minister of Science and ICT, Park Yun-Kyu (pictured), has announced the nation's plans to enhance its fixed and mobile infrastructure to cope with the increasing data traffic demand. He highlighted the importance of collaboration with the private sector in research and development (R&D) efforts.

Under the K-Network 2030 initiative, which promotes cooperation between the public and private sectors in R&D of next-generation networks, satellite communications, and quantum communications, various measures will be taken to achieve the vision of a digital co-prosperous society.
The program also focuses on innovations in software-based networks and the strengthening of supply chains.

By 2026, South Korea aims to double the data rates offered on backbone networks and quadruple it by 2030, in response to the predicted six-fold increase in data traffic by 2027 compared to 2021. Additionally, there are plans to increase the capacity of undersea cables.
In terms of future developments, the country aims to conduct pre-6G demonstrations by 2026 and pilot satellite networks by the following year.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Park emphasized the significance of AI in transforming society, stating that it complements human intellectual abilities. He highlighted that "realizing this super intelligence is not limited to a specific location."
Park also mentioned the release of ChatGPT, a development that marked the beginning of the commercialization of AI.

Furthermore, he recognized the metaverse as a crucial development, explaining that it expands the activity space of humans into the virtual level.
