In an English-dubbed clip shared by GKIDS during the Ghibli Fest screenings of Spirited Away, voice actor Masaki Suda discusses his experience playing the peculiar avian character in The Boy and the Heron. This rare glimpse includes a conversation between Suda and Kenshi Yonezu, who lends his voice to the film’s theme song, "Spinning Globe." Watch it here.

Actor Suda recounts how Miyazaki humorously apologized for the odd nature of Suda's character, saying, "He told me, 'Sorry for giving you such a strange role,'" to which Suda responded that it was no trouble at all.

Certainly, the role is as unique as the storyline itself. The Boy and the Heron introduces audiences to Mahito, a boy grappling with his mother's death. His father moves them to a new family life with a stepmother, where Mahito stumbles upon a mysterious grey heron. This creature is not only a talker but also a taunter, and leads Mahito into a world inhabited by both the living and the deceased.

The film boasts voice talents such as Soma Santoki as Mahito in the original Japanese version, with Luca Padovan and Robert Pattinson voicing the boy and the heron respectively in the English adaptation.

Suda took the unique approach of studying real heron sounds—concluding they make "really strange sounds, or more like noises." Experimenting with various vocal inflections, he ultimately left the final decision to Miyazaki's discerning ear.

"When trying out different voices, the moment Miyazaki said, 'That's it!' felt like divine intervention," Suda describes. The elusive approval from Miyazaki swiftly propelled the rest of the production forward.

Kenshi Yonezu, involved in the film's music, shared his overwhelming experience working with the legendary filmmaker. He expressed feeling lost in the creative process, likening his usual solitary workflow to a "weaving crane." Witnessing Miyazaki being moved to tears by the music brought everything into perspective.
