Liberal Democrats commissioned research from the House of Commons Library, illustrating that 1.9 million individuals reside in the catchment areas of seven NHS hospital sites affected by RAAC. Moreover, 43,000 NHS employees, including 11,500 nurses and 4,850 doctors, work at these hospital trusts.

Lib Dem leader Ed Davey described the situation as a "national scandal" for the large number of individuals residing in areas with hospital buildings at risk of collapsing. Davey emphasized the commitment of doctors and nurses during the pandemic, asserting that they deserve a safer working environment.

"The government must address their failure in dealing with crumbling schools and prioritize the repair of these hospitals without delay. The safety of NHS staff and patients is at stake; we cannot afford to waste any more time," Davey added.

Hospitals at Risk

University Hospital Southampton is the most affected, with 468,295 patients residing in its catchment area. Blackpool Teaching Hospitals follows closely with 316,122 individuals, while the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn has 249,000 people living in its catchment area.

The issue gained further attention after Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan, attracted criticism for her handling of the RAAC problem in schools. Keegan was captured on camera claiming she deserved more credit for handling the situation effectively.

The Guardian reported her comments, where she referred to her critics as "sensationalists", during a closed-door Tory drinks reception in Westminster.
