BritBox's 'Passenger': First Look, Cast, Premiere

BritBox has announced that the upcoming ITV series, Passenger, will be available for streaming on its platform in the U.S starting in 2024. It's important to note that this show should not be mistaken for the similarly named UK TV series Passengers. The previous series aired on Channel 4 in the 1990s and was later revived in the early 2000s. In stark contrast, the new Passenger series is a fresh drama categorized as a "dark comedy thriller" revolving around a small community that deliberately ignores bizarre events among its residents.

This series was first announced by BritBox International and ITV as a collaborative production in March 2022. ITV revealed that the script for the debut episode was penned by actor-turned-screenwriter Andrew Buchan, recognized for his role in the widely acclaimed Broadchurch. While there are some similarities between the premise of Passenger and Broadchurch, the former was initially pitched as a horror series instead of a comedy. Both Passenger and the family drama Maryland, written by Suranne Jones, marked ITV's foray into projects written by actors-turned-writers, with the latter premiering on ITVX in May 2023.

Production for Passenger kicked off in February 2023, coinciding with the announcement of the cast as filming commenced in Cornholme, North of Manchester. Receiving considerable attention, Wunmi Mosaku (Luther) was unveiled as the lead character, retired detective Riya Ajunwa. This casting was a significant achievement for Mosaku, who had recently garnered praise for her performances in the critically acclaimed Lovecraft Country and the successful Disney+ series Loki. Joining her in the cast are David Threlfall (Dodger) as suspect Jim Bracknell and Rowan Robinson (So Awkward) as victim Katie Wells. Take a first look at these characters below.
