France Bans Apple iPhone 12 Model
In a surprising move, a national regulator in France has prohibited the sale of Apple's iPhone 12 model in the country. The ban was implemented on September 12th after tests conducted by the regulator revealed that the device emits radiation levels surpassing the allowable limits in Europe.

This decision has sparked a renewed debate on smartphone radiation levels, coinciding with the recent unveiling of Apple's latest iPhone 15 model during a highly anticipated announcement event.
Exceeding Radiation Limits
European regulations dictate that smartphones must adhere to a maximum radiofrequency specific absorption rate (SAR) of 4 W/kg when held in the palm of one's hand or placed in a pocket. However, the French regulatory agency, ANFR, revealed that the iPhone 12 has an SAR value of 5.74 W/kg, exceeding the specified limit.

ANFR stated, "Consequently, Apple must immediately take all necessary measures to prevent the iPhone 12 from being made available in the market. For devices already in use, Apple must implement the necessary corrective actions to ensure compliance, or else a recall will be necessary.
Apple's Response
Apple has responded to the ban by announcing that they will release a software update to address the issues raised by French regulators. An Apple spokesperson assured, "We will issue a software update for French users to align with the testing protocol used by regulators. This matter pertains to specific testing procedures and does not pose a safety concern."

The iPhone 12, which introduced significant design changes and 5G compatibility, was initially released only three years ago, experiencing delays in production due to issues and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Past Concerns
This is not the first instance of concerns regarding high radiation levels in smartphones. In 2019, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) investigated the safety of radiation emitted by various smartphones, including models from Apple and Samsung. At that time, none of the devices were found to exceed the established safety levels.
