This week marked the end of an era as Apple bid farewell to the Lightning port with the launch of the iPhone 15 series and its Pro models. As we reflect on this significant moment, let's take a nostalgic look back at the devices that have been powered by the Lightning port over the years.
The Journey of the Lightning Port: A Walk Down Memory Lane
In 2012, the iPhone 5, iPad 4, and iPad mini entered the scene, all equipped with the Lightning port. This port was introduced as a replacement for the 30-pin connector that was previously used by Apple on its iPods. The transition to the Lightning port started with these devices and paved the way for the future.
Although the iPhone 5, iPads, and iPods still had the 3.5mm headphone jack at the time (which later disappeared with the iPhone 7 generation), Apple signaled its direction by offering wired EarPods with a Lightning plug instead of a traditional 3.5mm jack.
The accessories included in the iPhone 7 box
Over the years, the Lightning port became the standard for Apple devices. While we won't dive into all the cables and chargers, it's worth mentioning the Lightning to 3.5mm adapter that was included with every iPhone 7. This adapter, along with Lightning EarPods, accompanied each subsequent iPhone until 2018.
The devices powered by the Lightning port were not limited to iPhones and iPads. Accessories like wireless headphones such as AirPods and battery-powered electronics like keyboards and mice also adopted the Lightning port. However, it's worth noting that these accessories will be transitioning to USB-C alongside the Macs they connect to.
With the rise of the USB-C port, it's time to bid farewell to the Lightning port. Though it served as a crucial connection for Apple devices for a decade, it's time to embrace the new standard.
