Hiya, a US-based call performance management company, explained that these free profiles provide valuable information like a business's name, phone number, operating hours, and directions, designed to assist consumers and attract potential customers.

The company's honeypot, which employs hundreds of thousands of Hiya-owned numbers to track spam calls, recorded over 17,000 robocalls targeting Google Business Profiles.

These robocalls employ various strategies, including asking businesses to verify their profiles or indicating that their accounts have been flagged for review.

In these calls, users are requested to pay a fee for making changes to their accounts or verifying them, despite the fact that Google offers these profiles for free.

Hiya's report revealed that some of these calls were made to non-business users, leading the company to suspect that they are random robocalls rather than specific targets. Hiya's honeypot numbers, which are unlisted, also received these calls.

In response to scammers attempting to exploit its business profiles, Google has taken legal action, filing a lawsuit against one of them in the US last year, as per Hiya's report.

Based on Hiya's data, the highest volume of these calls was observed in the following countries (in order): US, Canada, UK, Australia, Italy, Germany, India, Spain, and Poland.
