Consider These Possible Causes of Missed Periods

1. Exercise

"An excessive amount of physical activity can create stress on our bodies which then affects the hormones that regulate our periods," points out Dr Patel. Hence, if your periods become erratic or halt altogether, consider reducing your exercise intensity. ️‍♀️

2. Stress

Lack of sleep, anxiety, gut health, digestion... stress takes a toll on both our physical and mental health, as well as our menstrual well-being. If you're experiencing more stressful feelings than usual, don't be surprised if your periods become heavier, more painful, shorter or longer.

3. Contraception

"Some birth control methods like the IUD and injections can result in a missed period," informs Dr Patel. "Using contraceptive pills can also cause irregular periods and can be utilized to delay your period if you choose to skip a cycle."

4. PCOS

Around one in 10 women in the UK have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), which could cause irregular cycles. "Approximately one in three people with PCOS might experience a halt in their periods due to the condition" shares Dr Patel.

5. Menopause

A missed period could be an early sign of menopause. "Menopause leads your periods to thereafter become irregular and eventually stop because of dropping hormone levels," comments Dr Patel. "This can also occur prematurely, known as premature menopause."

"If you've been sexually active and have missed a period, there is a possibility of pregnancy," warns Dr Patel. "This can happen even if you have used contraception. It is also possible to get pregnant whilst on your period if ovulation has been delayed."
