Five Nights at Freddy's director details the difficulty of working with "high maintenance" animatronics

Emma Tammi, best known for directing the 2018 western horror film The Wind, has been tapped by producer Jason Blum to helm the movie adaptation of the popular video game franchise Five Nights at Freddy's. Tammi admits that she wasn't familiar with the game at first, but drew inspiration from her experiences at Chuck E. Cheese, the pizza chain known for its animatronic mascots. She describes the challenge of capturing the right balance between creepy, magical, hilarious, and awkward elements in the film's animatronics.

"Real monsters" on set

One of the biggest challenges Tammi faced while filming was working with the animatronics themselves, which were designed and built by The Jim Henson Company. She wanted the creatures to have an authentic feel, reminiscent of the animatronics from 80s and 90s films. However, the realistic nature of the animatronics meant they required a high level of maintenance and had limited operating time before risking damage.

A unique blend

Tammi aimed to create a movie that subverted expectations and blended various genres and tones. Drawing inspiration from classic Spielberg films, the dark tone of Joker, and the dreamlike camerawork of Terrence Malick, she wanted Five Nights at Freddy's to be a supernatural, dark, zany, emotional, and scary experience for viewers. The film is set to hit theaters on October 27 and will also be available for streaming on Peacock the same day.
