In an interview on Cheryl Burkes’s podcast Sex, Lies and Spray Tans, Bergeron admitted that his comment was thoughtless. He revealed that while his fellow judges gave Biles harsh feedback, judge Carrie Ann Inaba had been complimentary. Upon hearing from a producer that Biles didn't smile during the compliments, Bergeron made the ill-advised remark.

Bergeron acknowledged his mistake, saying, “Now, what woman wants to hear a guy say, ‘Hey, sweetheart, smile!’” He praised Biles for putting him in his place and acknowledged that he should have taken a moment to process the information before speaking.

Speaking about Biles' powerful response, Bergeron said, “I was so properly put in my place.” Biles went on to wear a T-shirt bearing the phrase “Smiling doesn’t win gold medals” during a photo op with Bergeron, emphasizing her strength and determination.

Biles recently made a highly anticipated comeback at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, after taking a two-year hiatus from the sport to prioritize her mental health.
