Barbara Knox, known for her portrayal of Rita Tanner on Coronation Street since 1972, has committed to continue her role on the show well into 2024, despite turning 90 on September 30. She holds the distinction of being one of the longest-serving cast members, appearing in 3,885 episodes out of the soap's 10,700. Knox's dedication to the show has made her a true professional, and the news of her contract extension was welcomed by the show's executives.

An insider stated, "Barbara is in Corrie’s DNA. She is a true pro and the executives were delighted that she put pen to paper to ensure she’s on screens into next year. Corrie is a lovely, steady place to work with a supportive team so it makes it easy to fit around family, having kids and as the cast have grown older."

Despite her impressive tenure, Knox reportedly still worries each year that her contract may not be renewed. Co-star Sally Ann Matthew, who plays Jenny Connor, praised Knox's professionalism and dedication to her craft, noting that Knox frets over forgetting lines and strives for perfection. The news of Knox's contract extension comes ahead of an ITV telly special to celebrate her contributions to the show.

The special will be hosted by Bradley Walsh and will feature past and present Corrie actors gathering to honor Knox's career and reminisce about her most memorable moments on the show.
