Dr Mark Kennedy's contribution to the project involved gathering data from the kilonova using the European Southern Observatory's New Technology Telescope based in Chile. Despite being physically located in Co Cork, Kennedy was able to remotely access and operate the telescope. The data he collected enabled the discovery of the optical counterpart to the kilonova.

Kennedy emphasized the significance of the discovery, stating, "Not every gamma-ray burst can be studied with the JWST, and the emitted light can diminish rapidly." He further explained that the collaboration between NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and scientists like himself, who directed their telescopes towards the suspected explosion site, played a critical role in capturing the footage. Kennedy's access to the telescope in Chile allowed him to observe the aftermath of the explosion, leading to the identification of a new celestial object in the night sky.

In the weeks following the observation of the footage, the team submitted proposals to utilize the JWST for in-depth study of this rare event.
