Oppenheimer actor Cillian Murphy has spoken about the film's sex scenes whilst commending his "phenomenal" co-star Florence Pugh. The Irish artist portrays Robert J. Oppenheimer, the leading physicist whose secret lab created the atomic bomb during World War II.

In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald before the film's release on Friday, Cillian talked about the highly discussed sex scenes. These scenes, featuring "prolonged, full nudity" from Cillian and Florence, resulted in the film earning an ‘R’ rating, the US equivalent of a 15+.

“Those scenes were written deliberately,” he said. “[Nolan] knew that those scenes would get the movie the rating that it got. And I think when you see it, it’s so fucking powerful. And they’re not gratuitous. They’re perfect.”

The director clarified his choice to feature intimate moments in the biopic, stating to Insider that they are "essential" to understanding Oppenheimer’s life as a whole.
