Cathy's Triumphant Return to Two Doors Down

Doon Mackichan, famously known for her role as Cathy in the sitcom Two Doors Down, has made an unexpected comeback. "So people are very relieved that I haven't just completely gone," she expresses with a relief that fans share.

While Mackichan took a year's hiatus and was temporarily replaced by Siobhan Redmond, it turns out she never had the intention to leave for good. "It was gutting," Mackichan reflects on her time away, but her determination to return was met with open arms: "Can we make this work? It was like, 'Well, I would love to come back. Can we make this work?' It was like fireworks in the sky. 'Yes, yes, yes!'"

Explaining the character's absence, series co-creator Gregor Sharp clarifies, "It was an availability thing with Doon." When the opportunity arose for her return, it was clear that her vibrant and comic presence was a valuable asset. "She brings a lot of comedy force, both as a character and Doon as an actor. And so it felt like a card that you'd definitely want back in the pack."

Mackichan's co-star, Jonathan Watson, who plays her on-screen husband Colin, was equally surprised and delighted by her return, praising the unique dynamic she adds to the show. "We weren't expecting her back," Watson admits. "But I think the dynamic Colin and Cathy bring to it as an annoying couple helps the storylines in so many ways."

In a true twist of fate, Cathy's return becomes the central plot in the show's new season opener, leading to a series of humorous and awkward situations as she unintentionally crashes a gathering. Mackichan identifies with her character's struggle: "I think Cathy is shocked at the level of not being welcomed back," revealing a vulnerability in Cathy not seen before. "Why Cathy was missed, probably, is because she gives something to push against. She's just rude!"

Sharp elaborates on the show's structure, "So we don't really follow a big series arc. But obviously with a character like that leaving and then coming back, that is something you have to deal with in sequence order."

As for the audience's reception, Mackichan feels the love, "So people are missing her, which is really nice to know. I didn't really realize how much they missed Cathy.
