Vodafone, Nokia, and AST SpaceMobile Make World's First Space-Based 5G Call

Satellite player AST SpaceMobile partnered with AT&T, Vodafone Group, and Nokia to achieve a significant milestone in the telecommunications industry. They claimed to have successfully completed the world's first space-based 5G call using readily available smartphones. This breakthrough was accomplished during a test conducted from Hawaii, USA, to Madrid, Spain, utilizing standard Samsung Galaxy S22 handsets, AT&T spectrum, and a test satellite provided by AST SpaceMobile.

In addition to the successful 5G call, AST SpaceMobile also achieved an impressive increase in download data rate during another test, clocking in at around 14Mb/s, surpassing previous trials.

Driving Accessibility and Connectivity

This significant achievement aligns with Vodafone Group's mission to bridge the mobile usage gap for millions of individuals across Europe and Africa. Speaking about the milestone, Vodafone Group CEO Margherita Della Valle emphasized the importance of this step towards realizing their ambition.

Collaboration for Success
AT&T Network's Head, Chris Sambar, highlighted the significance of ecosystem-wide collaboration. He acknowledged that innovative achievements like this would not be possible without working together towards a shared vision of space-based connectivity for consumers, businesses, and first responders globally.
