Among the respondents, 26% expressed their desire for a Brexit vote in the coming 12 months, while an additional 21% hope for it to take place within the next eight years.

Contrasting this, only 6% believe that the public should wait at least a decade before being asked for their stance on rejoining the EU. Meanwhile, 27% are of the opinion that there should never be another referendum on this matter.

Increase in Support for Staying Out of the EU

In a positive development for Brexit supporters, the poll indicates an increase in support for maintaining the status quo. Currently, 40% of voters favor staying out of the EU, marking a five-point rise since June when a similar poll by More in Common was conducted.

In contrast, 45% of the public believe that the UK should seek to rejoin, reflecting a slight decrease of two points from the June poll.

The survey further highlights that 14% of Leave voters would now back rejoining, while 19% of Remainers now support staying out.

Growing Momentum for a Second Referendum

Luke Tryl, the UK Director of More in Common, expressed that there is a "growing momentum" behind the push for a second referendum. He emphasized that the majority of support for rejoining the EU comes from those who were unable to vote in the 2016 referendum. Interestingly, among those who did vote, more Remainers would now choose to stay out, rather than Leavers voting to rejoin.

Tryl concluded by highlighting that around half of the public (50%) want to see a referendum on rejoining in the next five years. The decision of whether the UK ultimately rejoins will depend on the turnout of those who were too young to vote in 2016 during any future referendum.

The poll conducted by More in Common surveyed 2,336 adults between October 14 and 16.
