Talk shows make their return

CBS's "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert," ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and NBC's "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" were among the first shows to go off the air when the writers strike started on May 2. Now, they have returned with new episodes on Monday night.

Stephen Colbert, in his return to the stage, expressed his joy at being back and highlighted the protections against AI, cost of living increases, and better pay for streaming included in the new contract. He also humorously mentioned that the picket lines provided his writers with fresh air and sunshine, which they didn't particularly appreciate.

James Corden and Jimmy Kimmel's returns

Jimmy Kimmel opened his show with a cold open, appearing on a psychiatrist's couch, expressing his uncertainty about returning after the long strike. To his surprise, his first guest turned out to be Arnold Schwarzenegger, who reassured Kimmel with a playful twist on his famous catchphrase, saying "You'll be back."

Jimmmy Fallon, on his show, welcomed guests Matthew McConaughey and John Mayer. He also teased the appearance of Bono from U2, who played at the opening of the new Sphere venue in Las Vegas over the weekend. However, the bit with a phony Bono enclosed in a small sphere didn't quite land, prompting Fallon to acknowledge that it may take some time to regain the momentum.

Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert share their thoughts

Seth Meyers, whose show follows Fallon's, expressed his happiness at being back with his writers and jokingly admitted that he was already a little over the strike by lunchtime.

Stephen Colbert lamented the missed opportunity to share jokes about the numerous news events that occurred during the strike, saying that they had missed out on commenting on "154 indictments" and a summer packed with significant events.

Actors resume negotiation talks

The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has finally started negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. This marks the first time since the actors joined the writers in a dual strike on July 14. Talks between the two parties will continue on Wednesday.

The writers were allowed to return to work last week after reaching a three-year contract agreement with the industry's biggest studios, streaming services, and production companies. Union leaders hailed the deal as a victory on various issues, and the writers will now vote on the contract in a week of balloting.

While SAG-AFTRA leaders will take cues from the writers' agreement, they reaffirm that their demands remain the same since the start of the strike.

Host limitations and exceptions

Due to the ongoing strike, the late-night talk shows will have limitations on their guest lists. Actors who are promoting projects for studios involved in the strike will not be allowed to appear. However, there are exceptions, such as Matthew McConaughey, who appeared to promote his children's book, "Just Because," on Fallon's show.

SAG-AFTRA has granted interim agreements, allowing actors to work on many productions and publicly promote them.
