Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro: All You Need to Know

Google is hard at work developing the next generation of Pixel phones, and although official details have not been released yet, leaks have provided plenty of insight. Set to be unveiled later this year, likely in October, there are already a number of exciting features to look forward to.

There will be two flagship models: a smaller vanilla version and a larger Pro version. As with previous generations, the Pro model will offer a superior display and camera. Interestingly, the vanilla phone will be smaller than its predecessor. Let's dive into the details:

1. Displays

The Pixel 8 will feature an upgraded 120Hz refresh rate display, a noticeable improvement from the previous 90Hz. Although it will not use LTPO technology, leaked information suggests that the phone will have new refresh modes to conserve power, allowing users to choose between 10, 30, or 60Hz.

The new display will be slightly smaller at 6.17 inches, down from 6.3 inches. However, it will have a brighter panel, offering 1,400 nits typical brightness compared to the previous 1,000 nits.

New display configurations for the Pixel 8 series

The changes to the larger Pixel 8 Pro display will be less dramatic. It will have a similar size to the 2022 model but with a slightly reduced resolution, resulting in a pixel density of 490ppi. The minimum refresh rate will also decrease to 5Hz from the previous 10Hz.

2. Design

The Pixel 8 series will retain the "visor" design seen in previous generations, but with rounded corners on the display. The Pixel 8 will be smaller than its predecessor, measuring 150.5 x 70.8 x 8.9mm, making it comparable in size to the Galaxy S23 and smaller than the Pixel 7a.

The Pixel 8 Pro will have similar dimensions to the 7 Pro. Both models' designs have been confirmed through hands-on photos of an early Pixel 8 Pro prototype.

3. Cameras

Both the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro will feature a new 50MP main camera sensor, the ISOCELL GN2, replacing the GN1 found in the previous generation. This larger sensor with bigger native pixels will significantly improve image quality, and its Dual Pixel Pro technology will enhance autofocus capabilities.

The Pixel 8 Pro will also feature an upgraded 64MP ultra-wide camera with better low-light performance. However, the Pixel 8's main camera will remain the same as its predecessor, with a wider lens but no dedicated zoom camera.

4. Chipset

The Pixel 8 series will introduce the new Tensor chipset, which will later be used in the a-series as well. The Tensor G3, a third-generation custom chip manufactured by Samsung, will feature significant hardware upgrades and improved performance and energy efficiency compared to the previous G2 chip.

The GPU in the Tensor G3 will support ray tracing and offer better performance than its predecessor. Additionally, the new chipset will feature an advanced NPU for Google's AI capabilities.

Rumors suggest that the smaller Pixel 8 model may receive an upgrade in RAM, potentially offering 12GB instead of the previous 8GB. The Tensor G3 chipset also supports faster UFS 4.0 storage.

5. Battery and Charging

Details about the batteries are still scarce, but it is expected that the Pixel 8 Pro will retain its 5,000mAh capacity, while the smaller Pixel 8 may have a slightly decreased capacity. Additionally, the Pixel 8's wireless charging capabilities seem to be limited to 12W, whereas the previous generation offered faster wireless charging.
